My Students:
We are an ELL site, an At-Risk school with Title I reading, with an Early Childhood Disability program. Our students vary in economic status, ethnicity, ability, and previous school experience. Self-regulation is a skill some students possess, while others do not - regardless of their background. We want our students to be able to self-regulate.
My Project:
Kids from all backgrounds may exhibit significant behaviors and/or lack self-regulation skills. Research indicates children raised in poverty are especially likely to exhibit acting out behaviors, impatience, impulsivity, and inappropriate emotional responses (Goodwin 2013). “Children with poor self-regulation disrupt an entire classroom” (Perry). Self-regulation is an important skill for students of all ages. We want to create a space for calming & activities, to teach kids self-regulation.
My Students Need:
Students need a place to go where they can calm down, wake up, or participate in activities that help them self-regulate.
