Connecting Community with Schools
Janet Bochnick, a guidance counselor at Oregon Trail Middle School, noticed that one of her seventh-grade students rides her bike to school every day. She has to cross a busy road and travel on a very uneven sidewalk to get to Oregon Trail. When a teacher-colleague noticed a large bump on the student’s forehead, Janet learned it was a result of a tumble off her bike while traveling home from school that week.
Mrs. Bochnick decided to do some investigating and after a couple of mornings and afternoons stationed at the school's bike rack area, discovered many children depend on their bicycle to get to school on time every day; yet several did not have a helmet. When she spoke to the students about the need for a safety helmet, Mrs. Bocknick learned that several students had helmets, but thought themselves “too cool” and “too old” to wear a helmet. However, several said they would love to have a helmet, but their family could not afford one.
Mrs. Bochnick reached out to the Olathe Public Schools Foundation who connected her school to Mike Hall at the Olathe Fire Department. After taking individual student measurements, six students were fitted with brand-new bike helmets and now their daily ride to school is safe from head injury.
Our thanks go out to an attentive faculty member who contacted the Foundation and helped us make a connection! You can be part of the connection. Contact the Foundation and find out how you or your company might be a part of helping Olathe students.
Donate a Musical Instrument
The Olathe School District is seeking donations of used band and orchestra instruments for students unable to rent or purchase a musical instrument of their own. Especially needed are clarinets, flutes, trombones, trumpets, violas and violins. Donated instruments can be repaired, if necessary. National and local statistics reveal that participation in music programs keeps children connected to school and correlates directly with high graduation rates. Donating a musical instrument is tax deductible. For additional information contact Martha Gabel, District Fine Arts Coordinator, 913-780-8230, or firstname.lastname@example.org
