My Students:
My math students, all 2+ years below grade level, are primarily ELL on reduced/free lunches. Their home languages vary, from Amharic, to Spanish, to Hindi, among others. With little English at home, wordy instructions are often confusing. However, at home they love playing math games that give feedback, as small victories can be a big deal.
My Project:
Every year at both schools, I have a Family Math Night at both schools. I share how important it is for students to learn their math facts, and how this need grows with each year. I also send home math games including Multiplication Wrap-Ups, dice, and cards. Families love using these and students say how much they enjoy playing. I also lend students Flashmasters. They use these to practice operands (+,-,×,÷). Now, after years of avid use, our Flashmasters and Wrap-Ups are wearing out
