Thriving at School - #Giving Tuesday

A school nurse shared this amazing Student Health Emergency Fund story with us recently.  When a student has an immediate health need, the Student Health Emergency Fund is here to help.

One of our students returned to school in August with a right cochlear implant that was lost and a left cochlear implant that was not turned on but was working after it was charged.  When the right cochlear was found it needed several cochlear implant parts including one magnet and two cords.  Without the cochlear devices working, he has bilateral sensorineural hearing loss which makes it difficult to impossible to hear others.

We work closely on a daily basis with students who have hearing impairment and check their devices daily in the preschool setting to be sure our students have every opportunity to excel during the academic day.  This student is not covered under insurance.  The SHEF funds allowed the missing parts to be replaced and extra batteries and a charging station to be purchased to keep at school so he would have working implants on a daily basis.

Since the purchase of the implant supplies our student has flourished.  Academically, he has improved and his ability to use speech has grown exponentially. He has begun to interact and communicate with others socially.  This has truly been a need that was met and provided a great increase in development in all areas.  Thank you for helping this little one excel as he begins his academic career with Olathe Public Schools.
