My Students:
Middle school students come to the library still loving to read. They’ve spent six happy years reading through the entire elementary library and they’re ready for cool new books.
The middle school library, though, is BIG and SCARY. To pick out a “chapter book,” they have literally 5,000 to choose from. Book selection should be a joy, not a slog!
My Project:
Just like book stores and the public library, I’m ready to DITCH DEWEY and shelve by genre. I’ve sorted out broad categories (Mystery, Action, etc.) and subcategories (dystopia, humor, etc.) to help students hone in on the perfect book.
I’ll use simple colored label covers to quickly communicate genre, but labeling takes money, and my budget's tight – I don’t want to sacrifice buying new books to make this change!
BIG BONUS – this will help my volunteers shelve more efficiently and correctly!
My Students Need:
Timberwolves need to stay EXCITED about reading, and genre-fying the library is a proven path to that goal.
