The High Cost of a Deep Breath

Olathe Public Schools Foundation
**District Nurse Story**

A district nurse shared with us this amazing story of how a gift from the OPSF Student Health Emergency Fund very possibly saved the life of an Olathe Student:

CJ is a delightful, sophisticated first grader who struggles with a severe case of asthma. His parents, who had recently moved to Olathe, had no idea that his State Insurance had lapsed until they went to the pharmacy to get his medication. His medication cost, without insurance, was over $400. CJ’s parent’s did not even have enough money to get his $200 rescue/emergency inhaler, so they left the pharmacy without any medication at all.

Without his medicine, CJ was struggling to breathe and getting very sick. Thanks to the Student Health Emergency Fund, and an agreement with Olathe Health and Price Chopper pharmacy to provide low cost medical care and prescriptions, I was able to immediately get the medication CJ desperately needed. Words can’t describe the parent’s relief and appreciation. They truly had nowhere else to turn.

The funding provided by the Foundation, coupled with the support of the community, undoubtedly improve the lives and health of many children in Olathe.

The high cost of a deep breath can force kids to go without their rescue inhaler.
